Nationalist People’s Coalition (NPC) Congressman Win Gatchalian congratulated 2015 Miss Universe Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach for winning the pageant, saying her victory is an inspiration to all Filipinos amid the challenging times.
“Pia Wurtzbach’s success is truly a victory for all Filipinos,” said Gatchalian, a senior vice chair of the House Committees on Metro Manila Development and on Tourism.
“Her sacrifices and triumph inspire Filipinos to continue fighting on amid the continuing poverty, worsening natural disasters, and corruption in the high and low ranks of the government. Her victory is an amazing Christmas gift to the country,” said the Valenzuela City lawmaker.
Wurtzbach’s parents separated when she was 9 years old and became her family’s breadwinner at barely 11, acting in different TV and movie roles under the name Pia Romero.
She joined the Binibining Pilipinas previously before finally being crowned on her third attempt and going on to beat 79 other contestants from other countries around the world.
“She embodies the Filipino spirit of resiliency and determination and an inspiration to the youth and the millions of OFWs who work hard and sacrifice a lot for their families,” Gatchalian pointed out.
When asked why she should be this year’s Miss Universe grand winner, Wurtzbach correctly said that to be given the crown is “both an honor and a responsibility.”
“To be a Miss Universe is both an honor and a responsibility. If I were to be Miss Universe, I will use my voice to influence the youth and I will raise awareness to certain causes like HIV awareness that is timely and relevant to my country, which is the Philippines. I want to show the world, the universe, rather, that I am confidently beautiful with a heart,” said the new Miss Universe. (Monica Cantilero)
