PH, South Korean Legislators Move to Deepen Strategic, Economic Ties

Philippine and South Korean legislators are expected to further strengthen the two countries’ strategic alliance and economic cooperation following a recent high-level meeting in Manila.

“We are confident that the discussions held during the visit will further deepen the multifaceted partnership between the Philippines and South Korea across defense and security cooperation, economic relations, development and infrastructure cooperation, and people-to-people exchanges,” said Senator Win Gatchalian, president of the PH-ROK Parliamentary Friendship Association.

Rep. Kim Sung-won and Rep. Park Min-kyu led the South Korean delegation that met with Gatchalian. They were also joined by Senate President Tito Sotto and South Korean Ambassador to the Philippines Lee Sang-hwa.

Amid the Philippines’ efforts to strengthen its external defense capabilities, South Korea was among the countries that offered to grant the Philippines preferential loans, Gatchalian earlier said.

Discussions between the two countries delved into strengthening parliamentary cooperation on education, tourism, and revitalizing the country’s shipbuilding sector. The Philippines recently inaugurated HD Hyundai Heavy Industries Philippines’ new shipyard in Subic Bay, backed by South Korean and U.S. economic investments.
