‘Nanay-Teacher’ addresses concerns in teaching students at home

TANZA, CAVITE – Almost 500 parents participated in the ‘Parent-Teacher Camp’, which the city government of Valenzuela City organized at the Tanza Oasis Hotel in Cavite on August 29 to 31.

As one of the guest speakers, Valenzuela City Congressman Sherwin “Win” Gatchalian encouraged the active and continuous participations of parents in guiding their children to achieve academic excellence.

The former Valenzuela City mayor said parents are the partners of the government in giving quality education and shaping the character of the youth as they serve to be the students’ first teachers and role models.

In the three-day camp, participating parents underwent several group workshops on how to effectively teach students at home.

It also facilitated an open forum, where parents can ask child psychologist Dr. Lourdes “Honey” Carandang, who discouraged parents in entrusting the responsibility of teaching their kids at home to other people like grandparents or relatives.

But while the ‘Parent-Teacher Camp’ has helped address most parents’ concerns, Gatchalian still saw the need to review the program to support the complex needs of single or abused parents.

Aside from parent participation, Gatchalian said teachers should also be more considerate in accommodating the concerns of mothers and fathers.

Aside from Gatchalian, speakers in the ‘Parent-Teacher Camp’ includes incumbent Valenzuela City mayor Rexlon Gatchalian, City School Division Superintendent Wilfredo Cabral and Councilor Lorie Natividad-Borja.

The ‘Parent-Teacher Camp’ is part of the Valenzuela City Education 360 Investment Program which backs programs to provide for holistic approach in improving the learning student learning experience.
