Gatchalian to Judiciary: Speedy disposition of cases key in restoring public trust, fighting corruption

Senator Win Gatchalian vowed to provide the necessary budgetary support for the judiciary to help courts resolve cases more swiftly and restore public trust amid the growing number of government officials implicated in corruption cases.

“The Committee on Finance wants to make sure that the courts and the different levels of the judiciary are well equipped with the necessary budget and tools that will enable them to dispense cases as soon as possible so we can render justice,” Gatchalian, committee chair, said at a recent hearing on the judiciary’s proposed budget for 2026.

“Our job is to make sure that the budget is spent on items that will make the judiciary more efficient. That’s the only way to restore our people’s trust and confidence in the government,” he added.

The senator also urged the judiciary to come up with a roadmap that would enable the courts to efficiently manage the disposition of cases, noting that the average caseload per judge of 291 is quite high. The judiciary’s proposed budget for 2026 under the national expenditure program totals P64.013 billion.
