Senator Win Gatchalian renewed his call for the establishment of permanent evacuation centers in local government units as he visited families in Catanduanes who were displaced by recent powerful typhoons.
“Kailangang magkaroon ng permanenteng evacuation center lalo na ang mga lugar na laging napupuruhan ng mga bagyo at iba pang kalamidad para masiguro ang kaligtasan ng ating mga kababayan,” Gatchalian said.
The senator underscored his call as he distributed P6.072 million worth of cash and food assistance to typhoon-hit communities in Catanduanes. He was joined by Valenzuela Mayor Wes Gatchalian and Councilor Sel Sabino-Sy in delivering aid to affected families. Among the hardest-hit areas they visited was Baras, where Super Typhoon Uwan left thousands homeless after ripping through the coastal town and destroying homes and livelihoods. The team also made the rounds of Virac, Caramoan, Viga, San Andres, Bato, Gigmoto, Pandan, and San Miguel to assess the damage and extend support.
Meanwhile, Gatchalian explained that the establishment of permanent evacuation centers would also help address issues commonly encountered by evacuees, such as congestion, exposure to hazards, and the lack of adequate facilities.
