Gatchalian Backs PCG; Pushes for Higher Subsistence Pay Amid West PH Sea Tensions

Senator Win Gatchalian is pushing to boost the Philippine Coast Guard’s (PCG) capabilities and operations amid continuing tensions in the West Philippine Sea.

Gatchalian said he would look into the possibility of increasing the PCG’s subsistence allowance, noting that Coast Guard personnel currently receive only ₱150 per day compared to ₱350 for other uniformed personnel.

He emphasized the importance of maintaining high morale among PCG members, considering the harassments and challenges they face while patrolling the West Philippine Sea.

“Kahit na challenging ang situation, ang importante ay ma-sustain natin ang high morale ng ating mga kasamahan sa Coast Guard,” Gatchalian said at a recent Senate budget hearing on the PCG’s proposed 2026 budget.

“Let me express my appreciation, commendation, and full support to the PCG. Whenever you patrol the West Philippine Sea, not only do you risk your life, but you also assert our sovereignty,” the senator said.

Gatchalian emphasized that the PCG’s mission extends beyond national borders. “Ang trabaho ng PCG is not only for the Philippines but also for ASEAN. Anything that happens in the West Philippine Sea affects the entire region, even North Asia,” he said.
