Christmas bazaar to feature d’yario bag, banig as gift ideas

Running out of gift ideas this Christmas? How about giving away things made out of old newspapers?

You can choose from a wide array of items made of recycled materials such as old newspapers, which will be displayed in an exhibit in Barangay Ugong this coming December 14.

Marivic Bello, a 48-year-old housewife, is just one of the residents who have been turning Christmas gift ideas like d’yario rolls or banig into reality in Valenzuela City.

“Since may mapagkukuhanan ako ng mga d’yario, naisip ko na gumawa noong mga banig at ibenta,” Bello said.

You can also buy items made from old newspapers at the six-day bazaar, which will be held at the Valenzuela City Hall from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on December 15 to 20.

If you favor unique and eco-friendly ideas for Christmas gifts to give away to your friends and family members, look for the stall of the members of WIN Mothers Club or WMC.

The WMC, a volunteer group of Valenzuela City Congressman Win Gatchalian, will be selling d’yario bags that they have been making since August.

The group of “nanay” volunteers learned making fancy bags out of hand-woven old newspaper strips in an extensive training conducted by Lourdes Ocampo of the Rotary of the Greater Mandaluyong last August.

The training was part of Gatchalian’s livelihood programs and help residents of Valenzuela City’s first district earn extra income.

Last Thursday, WMC were able to sold d’yario bags at the bazaar organized by the Integrated Bar of the Philippines – Bulacan Chapter in Malolos, Bulacan.
