Heeding a call for help for Bulacan after being hit by Super Typhoon Karding, Senator Win Gatchalian moves to provide much-needed assistance to residents in some municipalities in the province.
A former mayor of neighboring Valenzuela City, Gatchalian comes to the rescue of thousands of families whose homes were either submerged in flood waters or damaged by the recent typhoon.
Gatchalian is visiting the municipality of San Miguel, Bulacan today, October 1, to distribute sacks of rice to about a thousand affected families. The Sangguniang Bayan of San Miguel passed a resolution placing the entire municipality of San Miguel under a state of calamity due to the damaging effects of the flood on agriculture, livelihood, and infrastructure.
Later in the day, Gatchalian will visit the remains of the rescuers who perished in the line of duty and will give financial assistance to the families of the five heroes.
Earlier in the week, Gatchalian co-sponsored a Senate resolution honoring the extraordinary heroism of the five members of the Bulacan provincial disaster risk reduction and management office. He also proposed a legislation that seeks to classify rescuers as regular employees of the local government units they serve, give them appropriate benefits, and provide them with the necessary training and tools they need to execute their mandate.
“Panahon na upang gawing regular sa kanilang trabaho, bigyan ng tamang benepisyo, pagsasanay, at kagamitan ang ating mga rescue teams sa lahat ng LGUs. Kilalanin natin ang kanilang makabuluhang papel sa ating lipunan, lalong-lalo na sa mga panahong nararanasan natin ang hagupit ng kalamidad at sakuna,” Gatchalian added.
