I understand that authorities withheld certain details of the incident to respect the privacy of the family and the school community. However, this and similar incidents in the recent past are persisting issues that must urge us to shift from reacting to each new case as it arises toward a more proactive approach by fully and effectively implementing the School-Based Mental Health Program mandated under the Basic Education Mental Health and Well-Being Promotion Act.

I will continue working with our education stakeholders to ensure that our schools remain safe and that our learners receive adequate mental health support.”
