Gatchalian calls for policy intervention to cushion adverse impact of 19% US tariff on PH exports

Senator Win Gatchalian called for appropriate policy interventions necessary to cushion the impact of the imposition by the United States of a 19% reciprocal tariff on Philippine exports.

“We should look at policy interventions to help those who will lose their jobs,” said Gatchalian, chair of the Senate Committee on Finance, at a recent public hearing led by the Committee on Economic Affairs relating to the impact of the US’ reciprocal tariffs.

He cited anecdotes that workers from certain US-exporting industries are already losing their jobs barely a month after the announcement of the reciprocal tariff.

Gatchalian said he is set to refile a resolution seeking to determine in specific terms the impact of the US reciprocal tariffs. The resolution also seeks to determine the potential supply chain disruptions and potential departure of manufacturers who want to avoid tariffs.

“Kailangan nating makita ang buong epekto ng reciprocal tariffs para makagawa ng mga polisiya na tutulong sa mga maaapektuhang sektor at mawawalan ng trabaho,” he added.
